About

How We Started

"I opened East Lansing Hot Yoga in the fall of 2011, weary of driving sixty miles for my hot yoga fix, and hopeful the Lansing community would embrace its first studio dedicated to practicing in a hot room. We opened with just three teachers, myself included, and for the first few months, life was a whirlwind of steady growth, each of us teaching doubles and triples more days than not, and a whole lot of learning! By the end of the first year we’d added several more teachers, music, sixty and seventy-five minute classes (all classes were ninety minutes in the beginning ), a studio in Mt. Pleasant, and we were planning our first teacher training. Abbey Weston and Maggie Olds were in that first YTT, and Samantha Corbit was in the second. In the summer of 2013, Abbey approached me about putting a studio in the space above Kewpees, her family’s restaurant in Washington Square. We opened Firefly Hot Yoga Bar in January of 2014, and two years and a month later, Samantha and I opened Haslett Hot Yoga. In January, 2018, Maggie and I opened Lansing Hot Yoga on the west side of Lansing. Then in September, 2018, I sold Mt. Pleasant Hot Yoga to Alison Miller, who changed the name to Yoga on Main.

Everything was flowing beautifully, then Covid-19 hit. In the spring of 2020, Alison closed Yoga on Main, Abbey, Samantha, and Maggie decided they wanted to go solo and left the MI Hot Yoga FFamELLHHY, and I found myself back where I started, with one studio....determined to carry on with a smile of equanimity, and optimistic that with a continued attitude of lovingkindness and all bodies welcome inclusivity, ELHY would thrive and survive. I'll see you on the mat, friends."
